Julie

“I’m Julie, I’m 32, I’m a single mum with two little girls, Jenny, who’s 9, and Alex, who’s 13. I live in Grangetown. The girls are always going on about saving the planet, if you’d listen to them, you’d think they’d do it by themselves. They’re always asking me about recycling.
“As a single mum, in a two bedroom house, working full time and over-time to get by, I just couldn’t answer them, I’d change the subject, or get annoyed. The kitchen is far too small and I’m far too busy to get into all this recycling stuff, I thought anyway.
“I imagined having to pile up hundreds of cans and bottles and papers and things for weeks and then load them all into the car and then take them to some centre. I just didn’t have the time or the patience.
“Then one day I was around the mum of one of Jenny’s friends for coffee and she told me about green bagging and how easy it is. She even gave me some green bags to try, so I gave it a bash. I just put all our tins, yoghurt pots and whatever in the green bags and everything else in the bin as normal. I was shocked how much rubbish could be used again, the old bin filled up so slowly. It wasn’t no hassle either.
“The girls were so happy and were telling everyone we’re saving the planet and I feel really good about it. I even put my rubbish in the right recycling bins in town when I never even thought about it before.”
