Did you know that in Wales we throw away a staggering 410,000 tonnes of food and drink each year? Rather than throwing food away that you know you are never going to eat, why not take part in our new competition for 2012- ‘A Fareshare for All’.
The Really Rubbish Campaign and Cardiff Council have teamed up with independent charity Fareshare Cymru to support communities to relieve food poverty.
We’re asking you and your pupils to raid the cupboards to find any unwanted, unopened, in-date, non-perishable food.
We are looking for food you might have had hiding away in your cupboards for a while, that you don’t think you’re actually ever going to eat and will end up being thrown away. Our competition is to see which school can gather the most items for the team at Fareshare Cymru to collect.
Items on the wish list are any unopened, in-date, non-perishable foods such as; tins of baked beans, tinned soups, tinned fruit, chickpeas, etc, jars of sauces, baby food etc. as well as dried pasta and rice, packets of Pot Noodles, pasta, lentils and any unopened boxes of chocolates, teabags, coffee, sugar and packets of biscuits.
Please note: We are not looking to collect any perishable goods, such as fresh fruit, vegetables and bread. No new items should be bought for this competition.
Fareshare has been operating since 2004 and is at the centre of some of the most urgent issues that face the UK - food poverty and food waste. Their vision for Wales is to see no good food go to waste. So let’s help them achieve their vision of a Wales where food waste is minimised and any surplus food is used to benefit those that need it most. The food will then be distributed to disadvantaged people across Wales who can benefit by eating it.
The competition ends on Friday 16th March, with collections at your schools taking place over a three-week period from Monday 19th March. All food donated will be collected before the end of term, and Fareshare Cymru will call each school to arrange a collection date. Please keep your items safely in bags or boxes ready for collection.
