The RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) Big Garden Birdwatch 2012 is winging its way to us this weekend - 28 & 29 January. The purpose of the event is to track any changes to the habits of garden birds over the years. Hedgehog numbers are said to have fallen in the last 50 years and now UK wildlife charities are asking for people's help in looking into whether hedgehogs are being affected by climate change. Hedgehog expert Dr Pat Morris did a study 40 years ago which showed that the temperature around us affects when animals come out of hibernation. You could take your unwanted good conditioned items to local charity shops so they can go to new homes instead of going to landfills! Japan is celebrating being one of the most successful countries to recycle plastics. People there have been asked to separate plastic waste from other waste and then all plastics are recycled through 'thermal recycling' which means they are turned into useful chemicals and burnt to generate energy. This really is a great way of looking after the environment as well as recycling!

The people of wales have been Reducing Reusing and Recycling like never before and in the 3 months between July and September not only did we produce 5% less waste than the same period in 2010, but we recycled a massive 49% of it! That's a UK record people. So while you're giving yourselves a well deserved pat on the back, keep on practicing those 3 Rs and see if we can get close to the magic 100%. As supermarkets try to reduce their packaging of fruit and veg, you could help to use less packaging by buying your healthy food from market stalls and picking up organic or free standing items which have not been packaged.
